2007: Karl (17) lives with his single father Werner (62) in a cramped flat in an East Berlin apartment block. His little brother David (8) is in a sheltered housing group. Karl feels overwhelmed in his contact with him, because David looks to Karl for what Werner can no longer provide as a father. Something unexpected happens after Werner’s heated birthday: Karl lays an egg. He tries with all his might to keep the hatching creature alive.

In a frozen world long after humanity is gone, a lonely mechanical monkey wanders the silence. It follows a mysterious call through the desolate wasteland, searching for a sign of life in a land of ghosts.

Behind the Scenes: The Human Vision in AI

AI is a powerful instrument, but the tool is only as effective as the vision guiding it. 'Echo' served as a prototype to test narrative consistency and workflow integration without relying exclusively on expensive pro subscriptions.

Character Consistency

The story is entirely human-crafted. After writing a shotlist, I generated character variations using tools like Google Gemini (NanoBanana) to define the look, but heavily retouched them in Photoshop. To ensure consistency, I manually composited the protagonist into environments, building the exact frames before animation.

Once the frames were composed, animation required a hybrid approach, leveraging proprietary models like Runway and Google Veo for motion quality, while experimenting with open-source workflows in ComfyUI.

The final edit in Adobe Premiere Pro smoothed artifacts and paced the narrative.
